11.11.14: “Nuclear Security in Kazakhstan – A Global Leader in Nuclear Responsibility” – Occasional Paper Online Now

KazakhstanUNSC.com – a multilingual website dedicated to Kazakhstan’s bid to secure a seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the years 2017/18 – is pleased to present the fifth in a series of Occasional Papers exploring the different aspects of Kazakhstan and its UNSC bid, entitled “Nuclear Security in Kazakhstan – A Global Leader in Nuclear Responsibility”.

The proliferation of nuclear weapons and nuclear terrorism are two of the most serious threats of the 21st century.   As a victim of nuclear testing during the Soviet era, Kazakhstan has been a staunch promoter of non-proliferation, and the removal and destruction of highly-enriched uranium, as this Paper examines in further detail.

Kazakhstan’s commitment to nuclear security – which represents one of the four key pillars of the country’s UNSC bid, along with food security, water security and energy security – has led UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to state: “By banishing nuclear weapons and joining in creating a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia, Kazakhstan has helped us to see that a world free of nuclear weapons is achievable.”

We hope that you enjoy the Occasional Paper, subscribe to our mailing list and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube for all the latest news and progress on Kazakhstan’s UNSC bid.
