Side-event to promote Kazakhstan initiatives within the UN Agenda was held in the United Nations Headquarters


To mark the Anniversary of the accession of Kazakhstan into the United Nations in 2 March 1992 and to promote Kazakhstan`s bid for the non-permanent seat for the UN Security Council for 2017-2018, and other initiatives within UN Agenda a thematic side-event was held by the Permanent Mission in the United Nations Headquarters.


In the light of a preparatory process for the Global Summit on Human Settlements of the UN Programme for Human Settlements (UN HABITAT) – the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, to be held in Quito, Ecuador in October 20160 – Delegation of Kazakhstan has introduced to the audience an achievements of implementing of national programmes relating to human settlements in Astana.


Adequate housing, infrastructure, environment and universal access to employment, basic services and resources – water, energy, food, health, technology – are the key priorities of the Government of Kazakhstan to improve public administration and the rule of law, promote economic growth, the transparency and accountability of the state, providing opportunities for all and developing of inclusive society.


The keynote speakers of the event – Cristina Gallach, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information and Yamina Djacta, the Director of UN HABITAT Office in New York in their statements noted high results of the Government of Kazakhstan in implementing national programmes and projects in that area.

The Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Kairat Abdrakhmanov introduced a report on practical measures of the Government to develop economy and infrastructure of Astana as a driving force of the region and Kazakhstan.


Hosting by Astana next year of international exhibition EXPO 2017 will give additional impetus to develop a “green energy” programmes, innovative ideas and projects.

In terms of a globalization of financial and economic markets, an establishment of Astana as an international financial center will allow to improve investment climate, promote financial institutions and enhance banking sector not only within Kazakhstan, but Central Asia as a whole.


The side-event was followed by a Photo Exhibition “Astana – the Crystal City”, demonstrating the transition of Astana into a place of high technology and innovations, at the Delegates Entrance area, General Assembly Building of the UN Headquarters.
